Lapinpolthajat - Wahlroosin Unelma LP, Rajoitus - Hardcore Attack 1995 LP, Hazard/Fight Back 12", V/A Grito Suburbano comp 12"

LAPINPOLTHAJAT - Wahlroosin Unelma 12"
(Finland, 2012 - Kamaset Levyt/Roku/Shogun)

I have no idea why I waited so long to get this, I can't think of any valid excuse. If you liked their first LP as I did, you are sure to love this one. It is shorter in length, but dare I say it is even better? It is in a similar vein of catchy early 80s Finnish hardcore punk but with leftist political, sarcastic and fucked up lyrics. Imagine LAMA with APPENDIX catchiness as far as sound goes. I had to ask a Finnish friend for clarification on the first LP's lyrics because I couldn't tell if they were being xenophobic or mocking people with those attitudes in one song. A fun fact, in asking this, he let me know that the band name references the Nazi Germany bombing of Lapland. Some of the lyrics have a pretty witty Born Against feel where you can't always read between the sarcasm at first read...and others just seem to be a little out there:

"The bong bubbles and the new Diskelmä
plays in the background
High on mushrooms, colors pulsate to the rhythm
The child support could buy a new bass
unless the money is not spent at the bar"

A little ditty called "Greetings From Berlin." I don't want to make it sound like I am discounting the lyrics, saying they are nonsense, since they actually seem to be about serious subjects like love, poverty and bad situations people can sometimes find themselves in, due to ill planned child rearing. I just love that there is a song that mentions a bubbling bong and Diskelmä in the same line. The lyrics are all actually pretty charming to me as they point out all the crazy stuff around us in our everyday lives that we normally think of as mundane. Anyway, I kind of got off track there. Fantastic record, I love this band, too bad more people in the U.S. aren't into them.

HAZARD / FIGHT BACK - Realities Of Hardcore Punk split 12"
(Japan/Japan, 2012/2010 - Kick Rock/Bloodsucker)

HOLY SHIT does the FIGHT BACK side rage! Just ignore that the cover art looks like an XBOX game and put this sucker on the turntable. Hails to Befa of Kick Rock records for making this a vinyl release (the CD was originally released in 2010 by the great Blood Sucker label). Tight and fast as hell Japanese hardcore with Tokurow from BASTARD on vocals. Do I really need to say more? Fans of 90s Japanese hardcore don't miss out. The HAZARD side is good, but the FIGHT BACK side is what's up.

RAJOITUS - Hardcore Attack 1995 12"
(Sweden, 1995 - Distortion)

The Swedish band singing in Finnish combo is unbeatable. This band just sounds so god damn MEAN, I highly recommend the 2nd LP released by Hardcore Holocaust (2005) and the 3rd LP released by Putrid Filth Conspiracy (2008). Noooo it's not your mysterious, paper thin treble record band, this is burly hardcore that just keeps slapping your face with an icy hand over and over again. This first LP is a little different than the next 2, but it has a cool raw lof-fi sound that the others don't have. Not my favorite record of theirs, but still cool to get, I am still missing their first 7" and a couple splits.

V/A GRITO SUBURBANO - compilation 12"
(w/ OLHO SECO, INOCENTES, CÓLERA)
(Brazil, 1984/1982 - New Face)

This is the third press (I believe) of this cool Brazilian comp I bought from a friend. The true winner here is OLHO SECO. Of course the whole comp is great, but OLHO SECO's guitar sound is so caustic and feral on these tracks.

NOLLA NOLLA NOLLA 12", THE DECAY - Tonight, (Back From The Death) 7", FORWARD - Devil's Cradle 7"

NOLLA NOLLA NOLLA 12" (Svart//Finland)
Svart records strikes again with another nice Finnish punk reissue. Formed in 1977, you pretty much know what to expect if you are a fan of this time period in Finnish punk...catchy, well played rock and roll influenced punk along the lines of something like RATSIA. The band broke up in 1982 after a self released EP, but this was recorded in 1984. This comes in a gatefold sleeve and booklet full of great full color photos and a write up by a band member. People in the US can get this from Havoc or Feral Ward.

THE DECAY - Tonight, (Back From The Death) 7" (General Speech//USA)
This is a re-release of this Swiss hardcore EP from 1985, except this time, this is a release of the original mix. As the story goes, this is the mix the band originally submitted but the pressing plant refused to press it as it was, so the band had to remix and submit a more tame version of the EP. 5 songs of raw, inept hardcore bliss that can be mailordered from General Speech. Check out the article about this band written on Shit-fi.com.

FORWARD - Devil's Cradle EP 7" (540//USA)
Bought this directly from 540 Records.
New 2 song 7" from Japan's FORWARD, out in time for Chaos In Tejas 2012, in which I regrettably did not attend. I am happy to report that this 7" shows a return to a form not seen since the While You Alive 12" EP. 100% absolutely raging Japanese hardcore on side A and then there is a new version of what is possibly the best Japanese hardcore song ever written on side B, "What's The Meaning Of Love," previously heard on the Hardcore Ball CD compilation and then later appeared on the Just Go Forward To Death 12" in 2000. The first version had a more raw and raging recording, while the 2nd version had better vocals and I dare say that this 3rd version is a perfect melding of the two. I really hope that this EP is foreshadowing on what's to come on FORWARD's new LP.

V/A STEP INTO THE LIGHT 12" & VENDETTA 7"

VENDETTA 7"
(VENDETTA MUSIC//Japan)
FANTASTIC 4 song 7" from VENDETTA from Japan. This year I vowed to slow down on my consumption of new Japanese HC releases, but I couldn't resist this one based on the reviews that I was reading. They have a raw sound mixed with a great melodic, UK82 vibe that I am just a sucker for. I gushed enough about the 2nd SKIZOPHRENIA 7" when it came out, but I think this record is even better!

V/A STEP INTO THE LIGHT 12"
(NINGEN-DO//Japan)
This is one compilation that I didn't want to buy. It was expensive and each band only has one song. I prefer a good solid JPHC comp to have 3-4 songs from each band. Then you also have the problem that most comps just aren't that good anymore...but Japanese comps tend to be able to pull this off better than most places. I went ahead and said "fuck it" and bought this with the VENDETTA 7". There are lots of bands that I like on it, so why not, when convenience is on my side? Most of these bands are more on the melodic UK side of things, which is a nice little twist from what Japanese HC is most known for. This is kind of a part 2 of The ACTION 7" comp that came out a few years ago. I absolutely love the ROUGH STUFF song (saw them play a great set last year on the GASMASK TERROR Japanese tour), and of course, the SKIZOPHRENIA, FOLKEIIS (although I wish they would go for less of a muddy guitar sound) and VENDETTA songs are great too. The multiple inserts are really cool, each band gets a side of a separated 7" size insert. Although I would have been in favor of less bands and more songs on this comp, I still say this is a keeper (although not essential).

ZYANOSE - Insane Noise Raid CD

ZYANOSE - Insane Noise Raid CD
(L.A.R.V.A.E.//Japan)
Ok, so obviously, we haven't done shit with this blog lately, been way too busy to keep writing detailed reviews. So I decided that I will just start reviewing everything that I take in for my personal collection. The reviews are going to be quick and dirty, but they will be much more plentiful and maybe timely enough to give people an idea on if they want to take a chance on something or not. Ironically, first up is the new ZYANOSE CD.

After Amanda and I got rid of over 400 CDs this is the first new CD that I bought in a while. First off, the packaging is great, I love how it looks like a pop CD, I don't know if you can see it in the photo, but the scrawled CRASS shirt girl was a nice touch. To top it all off, this cute looking CD is called INSANE NOISE RAID!

This 9 song ditty has actually given me a bit of a sigh of relief in knowing that I am not just some old hardcore dude that hates all the new noisy HC bands. The sound is perfect for what they are trying to do, and the bass guitar is fuckin' burly. The songs are well crafted, the CD goes through some nice time changes, too. I found that I was gritting my teeth through the whole CD. Love it.

Catch them if you can at Chaos In Tejas this year. Also, word is that this will be issued on vinyl by Black Water soon. I hope they keep the same vibe on the packaging!

Review: ACROSTIX - Dear Daily Life 12" (Freedom Fighter/FF006)

Acrostix photo taken by me, summer 2011
The CD version of this new ACROSTIX material has been out for a while and those who had boldly ventured into $30+ territory to mailorder a CD from Japan have been talking this up ever since. I have always thought ACROSTIX were a good band. They were good at the metallic AMEBIX Japanese hardcore style, but at the same time, I also thought some element of power was always missing. I assumed it was something about the recordings.

When I saw ACROSTIX in their hometown last summer, I knew it was true. Waves of positive power and energy poured forth from when they hit the first note. I finally could see this band for how good they really were.

So finally, this comes out on vinyl, brought to us by the Freedom Fighter label. Tip-on style gatefold jacket, insert, thick vinyl, obi, and silk screened dust sleeve (as they have done on other FF releases), this was given the royal treatment. Not sure what's up with the cover art...caught in the rat race, I guess? Anyway, the last few years have been bereft of great, traditional, Japanese hardcore for the most part, and I am happy to say the rumors are true about this album. ACROSTIX have changed their style to a traditional JPHC monster. They still have a metallic feel and there are a few dirgy areas, but for the most part, this 8 song 12" is a great fucking hardcore record. The power is in your face and the production is everything it should be. Loud and bright guitars, pounding drums, ruthless. This reminds me of a better sounding and better written ASSAULT s/t CD. Instead of coloring the whole vibe of the record, the dirgy parts now add to the beauty of the overall landscape. This record will not be cheap, but worth every penny. Right now, I can't think of a Japanese 12" that came out in 2011 that I like more.

Some places where you can pick this up:

Soap And Spikes

AGE (Japan) and HELLSHOCK tour 2010

It has been a little while since Hellshock has embarked on this large of a U.S. tour and if my memory serves me right Age's other U.S. appearances were short and limited to the coasts. Of course, Montreal also gets the pleasure of the only Canadian appearance at the Varning IV Fest. Don't miss out!!

PAINTBOX: Trip, Trance & Travelling 2x12" and Relics 12" OUT NOW!

Image of Trip, Trance & Travelling yellow vinyl version

Paintbox: TTT ad
Afters years of waiting, in the summer of 2009, Trip, Trance & Travelling was finally released on CD in Japan by H:G Fact. I knew it was going to come out on vinyl a couple months later, and bought the fucker anyway because I couldn't wait..if that tells you anything about how much I had been anticipating this third album of theirs. I have been in love with this band since I first heard them. Ultimate brilliance. Needless to say, I was not let down, I found myself floating on clouds of gummi bears while the hordes down below stabbed eachother with forks. Haters be damned and Chelsea R.I.P., too bad he didn't get to see this masterpiece come to light.

This is now available through Prank Records in the USA or H:G Fact in Japan (who also has the CD version which was done in an extremely nice tip-on gatefold digipack). Also, can't forget that the Relics collection is also out on 2x12" & CD...this collects my personal favorite material of this phenomenal band. Don't miss out on a great way to have their harder to find material all on one release. FUCKING SHIT.

See You In Hell side:
•V Zajeti
•Nadechnout Se

I am always chomping at the bit for new CROW material and when I found out that these new EPs were coming out, it was no different. For those that don't know, CROW is a Japanese band that has been releasing great material since the mid 80s. The trademark vocals are haunting and coarse...I love it. The music has transformed a bit since the early days of their DISCHARGE inspired d-beat days. For the most part, their recent stuff is crusty, metallic, dark hardcore, with a little experimentation here and there.

Each of these records come with 2 CROW songs, I have to admit, the songs on the SEE YOU IN HELL split shine a little brighter for me. The first song, "Traitors" is just fantastic. It starts off with an epic midpaced riff, that is harmonized, but then it picks up in pace. These days, "epic" and "crust" seem to scare people, but CROW defies all odds as they can do no fucking wrong. I don't feel that it takes away from their power, it just sounds wicked and haunting. Of course, I have to talk about the packaging for the SEE YOU IN HELL split. Really nice, silk screened, fold out covers, in silver ink, on black card stock. Looks great. The only little problem is that some of the type in the insert is too small and doesn't come through perfectly on the screen. The limited edition comes on red vinyl and 2 DVDs from SEE YOU IN HELL's '07 tour. It may seem like a bit much, but there is a lot of footage of many of the different great bands from their tour. Damn, I also have to mention, that the Czech band, SEE YOU IN HELL's side surprised the shit out of me. It's their best material that I have heard yet. It sounds more raw and seething than the previous efforts that I have heard. I will really be looking forward to their new releases...see if they can keep it up. I'm happy to say that their side is just as good as the CROW side. Fuck.

Ok, I just got the Prank ep today, "Flock Of Beast." When I first saw it, the cover art was a bit of a surprise, since they have never used a plain old picture of themselves live...as you can see, it's a picture of the vocalist. I usually look forward to some sick cut and paste, black/white art or even better, something hand drawn, like the demon face that they have been using on their recent releases, including both of these eps (originally from the cover of "The Door Of The End" 12" ep). Nevertheless, it still looks cool and you can't fault them for doing something different. 2 songs on this one and the songwriting is decidedly nastier than the SYIH split. Side A is a chugging, mid-paced, monster while side B picks up the pace but keeps the dark and ugly tone and ends in a mess of howling.

Both of these records are still available, and a re-mastered repress of the "Bloody Tear" 12" is coming down the pipeline as well. I'm crossing my fingers for another U.S. tour eventually, since I was a dumb ass and didn't fly to go see them when they came before.

THRASH TIL DEATH worship

CLASSIC FUKKIN RAGER. I finally got this record on ebay. I have bid and failed multiple times. It is now in constant rotation. Released by Pusmort in the USA and Selfish in Japan circa 1987. It features GAUZE, OUTO, SYSTEMATIC DEATH and LIPCREAM!!! Every track is killing and the cover is a classic. Thrash Til Death definitely kick started my interest in Japanese HC. I first heard it in Rapid City in 1996 or 1997. Jason Wade had it and we drunkenly jammed it at the "house of shit" all the time along with his copy of the S.O.B./Napalm Death flexi and the SIEGE 7". Sorry kids, records just aren't this good anymore. Thanks Jason. Thanks Pushead.

Crude: Attitude 12" reissue review (versus mode)

Original Straight Up pressing on the left, Feral Ward reissue on the right.
front of Crude: Attitude original on the left, repress on the right

back of Crude: Attitude original on the left, repress on the right

Label: Feral Ward (USA) - YAN 056
Release date: April 2009
Quantity: 1000?

Track List:
•Stand And Fight Again
•Over The Wind
•The Scum Selled Oneself
•Never Give Up Willpower
•Positive Will
•Human Feelings
•True Bravery
•No Light Soul Of State

Finally, a real Crude album is released in North America. I no longer have to drop my head in dismay when people talk about how raging the "Immortality album" is, when in reality, it is just this weird compilation of Crude songs...and not really a Crude album at all. It's crazy to think that it has been 8 years since this band from Hakodate, Japan has released a proper album. Since the Attitude album originally came out, there has been the live tracks on the Wandering Folk split CD, the low-fi recording on the 3 way split CD/one sided-LP with Burial and Nightmare, and the recent H:G Fact 7" where they completed a proper recording of the songs from the 3 way split. Hopefully, their recent touring and releases lead up to a blistering new masterpiece. And also, hopefully Crude starts to get the attention that they deserve, in this part of the world.

The Attitude 12", in my view, is the 2000s answer to Death Side. The ripping leads are too many to count, and the furious hardcore punk onslaught is non-stop, from the infectiously catchy first track, "Stand And Fight Again" clear to the end, with only a few moments lull during the somewhat ballad-like track on side B, "True Bravery." The drums sound like they are ripping through your speakers as the cymbals max out the treble frequencies. This quality gives the band a bit of an updated feel (as far as Japanese HC Punk is concerned) and a new take on a classic sound that few have been able to capture successfully (Selfish from Finland, being another prime example of the exception).

Original Straight Up pressing
Crude: Attitude original with insert

Feral Ward repress
Crude: Attitude repress with inside pocket sleeve

As usual, Feral Ward did a nice job. A good choice for the band to do the repress with him. The repress is mastered at 45 RPMs instead of 33, like the Straight Up version that was released in 2000. I'm not really sure why a short 12" like this was done at 33 to begin with. The result is, we get to headbang and play air guitar to a slightly louder record. The mastering job sounds very similar, except slightly more powerful, possibly due to the RPM change and better vinyl quality? There are some slight packaging differences to note. The dusk-like sky has been replaced by a more ominous cloudy sky and the back has a similar situation going on, but the song titles have been placed in a way that is actually legible. Of course, the nice pocket sleeve with rounded edges was a great touch. One thing that slightly bothers me is that it looks like the ostriches were re-done using Live Trace in Adobe Illustrator...but obviously, that has no bearing on how raging this album is. However, one thing that does...is the change in label art! I can't imagine why Feral Ward changed it! I want to see a picture disc of this album with the original label art graphics on it.

Feral Ward classy label art:

Original label art made by ragers who don't give a fuck:
Original label art made by ragers who don't give a fuck, side A
Original label art made by ragers who don't give a fuck, side B

Ok, despite the cowardly disregard for psychadelic, bald-headed raging, here is the Bells Of Doom Toll verdict: DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE, GET THIS SHIT IMMEDIATELY.

P.S., please do a nice reissue of the 1999 12" as well, I like that one even better.
Love, B.O.D.T.

G.A.T.E.S: Total Death 12" review

G.A.T.E.S: Total Death LP

•Overkill

Metal Punk mutants from Japan, G.A.T.E.S, get their 2005 CD collection of the demo tape and split 12" with Metal Skull finally issued on vinyl. Nice looking picture disc with Baphomet hanging out having a good time (hmm, seems familiar). Looking at the matrix, the vinyl looks like it was pressed with GZ from the Czech Republic (the pressing of 500 is just a guess on my part). A good amount of people have been itching for the Total Death collection CD to see a vinyl release since the original formats are pretty hard to come by. No complaints on the translation of sound to vinyl of this low-fi motor-metal masterpiece. But don't get me wrong when I say "lo-fi"...this sounds dirty-- but great, even as the double bass maxes out the low end and mid frequencies on my stereo; exactly how it should sound, in my opinion. Brace yourself as the Motörhead and Tank worship comes to a head with a cover of Motörhead's Overkill, as the last cut. I love the simple outer sleeve, the back side is completely black and the inner sleeve has a great black and white collage featuring gasmasks, Hitler Jugend, and Marshall 4x12s. Check out the nice write up on G.A.T.E.S and the Metal Punk Death Squad on this Agipunk site.

JUDGEMENT!

Judgement set list Aug 17, 2008

The band that I am most excited for Chaos In Texas '09 is easily Japan's Judgement. In the mp3 age, this band is no longer a secret held dear to Japanese hardcore fanatics around the world. Most people with any taste, have at least a digital copy of the 4 devastating 7"s on H:G Fact. Last I heard, a vinyl version of the "Just Be..." CD ep will finally see the light of day, hopefully in time for the fest. It took me, along with others, a little time to warm up to the new line up and song writing on the "Just Be..." CD ep...but rest assured, the timing is right for Austin, Texas to be blasted in the face with whatever they throw at us. Above is a set list that my pal, Hisashi snagged at a Tokyo Judgement set on August 17, 2008 (Chelsea Memorial show).
