TANK - Filth Hounds Of Hades 12", NEGAZIONE - Lo Spirito Continua... 12"

TANK - Filth Hounds Of Hades 12" (Attic//Canada - Kamaflage//UK)
What really needs to be said about this band? Classic, powerful, driving, rock and roll Motorhead type band, I could sit around listening to TANK all day. This is the weird looking Canadian press from Attic Records (2nd press, I believe). Take me back to 1982, if only I was listening to TANK instead of HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS. I have bought lots of great records from RJ the past couple years and here is another one to add to the vault.

NEGAZIONE - Lo Spirito Continua... 12" (Mordam//USA - Konkurrel//Netherlands)
It's difficult to imagine Mordam releasing a raging Italian HC record from 1986, but here is proof that it happened. The 1985 self-released Tutti Pazzi EP seems to be more talked about for its pure raw intensity; this Lo Spirito LP shows the band becoming more competent with their playing with a bit of a slicker and fuller production sound...but not too much, mind you. This is the 2nd pressing I got from my friend Andy (1st pressing was released by Konkurrel only), this is great quirky hardcore, I love the odd changes and song structures while still working within a more or less straight forward ripping hardcore punk sound. Each song is packed with riffs and fury, this is a one of a kind record. I would love to see hardcore punk bands these days use a little more imagination in their songwriting.

WRETCHED

Wretched

Wretched started playing around 1980 in Milan, Italy. To this day, this band's intensity and rawness is matched by few. "Chaos non musica" was never more appropriate- the vocals are maniacal and the drums just sound like they are falling apart. Their passion is also shown on their releases, the records come with multiple inserts filled with writings about music and politics. Italy's history is smacked with political upheaval, so the Anarchist writings should come as no surprise. I am not sure what caused these fellows to want to play the demented music akin to a building crumbling from the top down...maybe a reaction to Italy's progressive rock scene of 70s and the dire circumstances of the realities of their daily lives?

Most people that I know found out about this band through the great P.E.A.C.E. 2x12" compilation. I don't remember specifically, but I would imagine that Pushead wrote his fair share about them.

Unfortunately, this great band's records are difficult to find, so snatch up whatever you can get your hands on! I am not a fan of bootlegs, but I think there are probably some legitimate compilations or reissue CDs floating around (I have a comp tape in my distro with them on it right now...The Ripping Thrash tape, reissued by Social Napalm). Of course, there are mp3s around, I'm sure, for the 21st century p0nx. There isn't much that I can really say that hasn't been documented elsewhere, so enjoy these pieces of eye and ear candy!

Not sure if they have any demo recordings floating around out there, I would love to hear them, if so. Get in touch!!

Releases:

Wretched / Indigesti split 7" (Autoproduzione, 1982)
Their material on this is probably their most insane sounding...I am still looking for a copy of this if anyone wants to unload! :)

In Nome Del Loro Potere Tutto È Stato Fatto 7" (Autoproduzione, 1983)
Recently bootlegged, heard it was relatively well done, don't know if the band received anything from it. However, this EP is included on 'The Furious Years Of Italian Hardcore Punk' CD, issued in 1995, I think this was a legitimate release.

Finira Mai 7" (Autoproduzione, 1983)
Fantastic release, with classic artwork. The title translates roughly to 'Never Ending.'

Libero Di Vivere Libero Di Morire 12" LP (Chaos Produzioni, 1984)
Here, you hear them start to tighten up a bit, starting to lose their ramshackle feel, still great though. This is the last record before they start going for a more metal sound. The last two records, I don't own and haven't heard them in a long time, so I can't really comment on them. The insane rawness is gone, but I would think that it is unavoidable to an extent, after playing together for 6 years, you're natually going to get tighter as a band and be forced to evolve. I don't have these next ones, but would like to!

La Tua Morte Non Aspetta 12" (Chaos Produzioni, 1986)

In Controluce 7" (Chaos Produzioni, 1988)

Finally, enjoy this great video of Wretched playing in 1984. Catch the Motorhead riff in there, in between songs.

Impact is a generally unsung great of early 80s Italian hardcore. Pre-internet, most people in the United States' only exposure to this band was from the P.E.A.C.E. comp. Recently, we are graced by nice, legitimate reissues: the Eu's Arse split 7" in 2007, and the Solo Odio 12", this year. In a time of horribly done bootleg records using MP3s as the source material, this is a welcome treat.

For many years, the split E.P. was scarce and expensive. The Eu's Arse split E.P. was originally released in 1983 during the heyday of great, raw Italian hardcore punk. Impact's guitar tone sounds like they plugged the guitar straight into a 4 track from a DOD pedal. It's muddy, ugly, sounds like shit. Fucking great. They managed to cram 7 songs on their side, so it feels like a full 7". The Impact cover art is one of the coolest looking covers of the time, in my opinion, and for this reissue, someone cleaned it up, boosting the black and white contrast. It looks great. I think there were 500 of the reissues done, something like 300 on the purple vinyl that United Record Pressing was running a special on at the time, and I think 200 on clear. The Eu's Arse side is no joke either. More Discharge sounding and decidedly more rough. The vocals are constantly cracking, with more of an emphasis on the d-beat, it sounds like it could have been an early Swedish release. Oh, and their solos are some of the most horrendous solos you've ever heard. Great. As far as I know, this band only had a couple releases: this record and a 7", plus a few comp tracks.

The Solo Odio 12" (translates to 'Only Hatred') was originally released only a year later (1984), but it sounds worlds different. It sounds like they learned to play a little better and went into a real studio. Don't be fooled by that though, this is still rabid as hell...10 songs in 15 minutes! The guitars are heavy and the drummer is ripping. There's a little more melody on this, but the overall tone is fast and desperate. A fantastic reissue, I don't have the original to compare it to, but the sound is crisp and cover looks great. Check out the cover art on the back: the naked cop being shot up into the air and the other one being drug by the dog while the punks are laughing. This record is perfect, I can't find anything wrong with it.
