Review: ACROSTIX - Dear Daily Life 12" (Freedom Fighter/FF006)

The CD version of this new ACROSTIX material has been out for a while and those who had boldly ventured into $30+ territory to mailorder a CD from Japan have been talking this up ever since. I have always thought ACROSTIX were a good band. They were good at the metallic AMEBIX Japanese hardcore style, but at the same time, I also thought some element of power was always missing. I assumed it was something about the recordings.

When I saw ACROSTIX in their hometown last summer, I knew it was true. Waves of positive power and energy poured forth from when they hit the first note. I finally could see this band for how good they really were.

So finally, this comes out on vinyl, brought to us by the Freedom Fighter label. Tip-on style gatefold jacket, insert, thick vinyl, obi, and silk screened dust sleeve (as they have done on other FF releases), this was given the royal treatment. Not sure what's up with the cover art...caught in the rat race, I guess? Anyway, the last few years have been bereft of great, traditional, Japanese hardcore for the most part, and I am happy to say the rumors are true about this album. ACROSTIX have changed their style to a traditional JPHC monster. They still have a metallic feel and there are a few dirgy areas, but for the most part, this 8 song 12" is a great fucking hardcore record. The power is in your face and the production is everything it should be. Loud and bright guitars, pounding drums, ruthless. This reminds me of a better sounding and better written ASSAULT s/t CD. Instead of coloring the whole vibe of the record, the dirgy parts now add to the beauty of the overall landscape. This record will not be cheap, but worth every penny. Right now, I can't think of a Japanese 12" that came out in 2011 that I like more.

Killer demos, out takes and live tracks compiled for one of the best hardcore punk bands of all time. If you have never heard VOID, you should probably check out the split LP with FAITH first, but if you are a VOID fan, I would say this is essential. I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and immediately blasted it. Some more liner notes and a more classic looking cover would have been cool, but you will hear no more complaints from me, this is a great testament to these young lads lashing out in frustration in the early 80s. Hey, it was a time of Moral Majority scrutiny, fear of Nuclear Holocaust and Jams®; so there was a lot to be pissed about. It's really cool getting a nice sounding copy of early versions of these classic songs and some other shit that I haven't heard before. I still remember the first time I heard VOID, I was not ready for the unhinged, savage, clusterfuck that was about to smash my face with no impunity.

Oh, and some of you might get lucky and get a copy on red vinyl that seem to be randomly popping up.

Sessions 1981-83 features 34 tracks including: 20 tracks recorded in November 1981 by Steve Carr at Hit and Run Studios (never before released); 10 tracks Recorded and Mixed in December 1981 at Inner Ear Studios (including the Flex Your Head cuts and the songs that ended up on the Condensed Flesh 7”); 2 tracks recorded in June 1982 at Inner Ear Studios by Don Zientara (out-takes from the Faith/Void LP); 2 live tracks from 1983. The LP edition features a free MP3 download.

Fans of the band, do yourself a favor, and avoid reading this article at all costs. Unless you want to read some boring trype (the exact opposite of VOID) written by some MASTADON FAN talking about WAVVES, PRURIENT and JOHN COLTRANE for some reason. Seriously PITCHFORK, stick to hyping shitty indie records and leave the real shit alone:

"It is with regret that I have to inform that Kollapse fest 2011 is cancelled. Alley Katz the venue it was to be held at has closed for the second time this year due to tax issues. The building has been seized by the landlord. A suitable replacement venue has not been found. The only venues that can host an event of comparable size are either booked, or charge substantially more than the rate Kollapse fest had with Alley Katz club owners. We apologize greatly for the inconvenience this may cause some, but this is truly out of our hands at this point. Bands please get in touch if you still wish to play a show in Richmond, VA around the dates, we can arrange something. Please contact us with any other thoughts and concerns. U.S. version of this 7" released by Grave Mistake. 6 blasts of smashing & grinding hardcore from Washington D.C. I am biased about this band because I have seen them live several times, but I think this E.P. does a great job representing Coke Bust's sound. USHC coming from a line of bands after Infest, No Comment, etc. It seems like I have grown up around bands like this, the sound is as American as the early 80s bands from D.C. that all worshipped the Bad Brains. I have to give respect to these guys for stubbornly sticking with this sound while it has become fashionable to take more influence from bands like Black Flag or The Swans. My hat's off to them.

Thankfully, there's no screwing around at all on the 6 songs of this record and there's a nice finishing touch with the heavy, mid-paced last cut, Deathbed. The lyrics don't really speak to me, as they are standard fare for this type of music, they just go in one eye and out the other for me. They cover personal and social issues that I would imagine most people expect. Even with that minor take back, this is an ass kicking record from a great band.

This is seriously some of the most grim music ever made. When I first heard this, my 20 year old mind was not prepared for the sledge hammer bludgeon that was to follow. Imagine lying in a Siberian torture tank filled with ice cold water while baluga whales continuously dive onto your decaying body.

Sometimes a band is so far ahead of the times or just so original that people aren't ready for them and only years later do they get the praise they deserve. This is truly the case of Winter. Winter formed in 1988 out of the ashes of local punk bands Doomsday and Meltdown. The thriving underground music scene in NY at the time was split between NYHC, death/thrash metal and punk. Each one was separate from the other in musical style, politics (or lack thereof) and fashion. Somewhere in the middle of all that Winter arrived. At this time every band from the area were playing as fast as possible. Winter however was the complete opposite playing as slow and heavy as possible. They tuned lower than any band and their tempos crawled at a snails pace. Inspired by bands as diverse as Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, Amebix, Rudimentiry Peni, King Crimson, Hawkwind, Carnivore and Discharge their combination of dark lyrics, low vocals and crushing slow tempos slowly built a following of punks metalheads and even some NYHC/crossover fans. In Long Island they would open up for the big death metal bands of the time like Sepultura and Death while also playing punk/d.i.y. /squat shows in NYC with bands like Nausea and A.P.P.L.E The band signed with Future Shock Records for the release of their debut LP Into Darkness. The album became an instant cult classic. As the years went on Winter's legacy slowly evolved from total obscurity to becoming a cult favorite who were respected around the world. Winter disbanded in 1991.

20+ years later the immense impact /influence of Winter continues on! From Cathedral to Grief to Unearthly Trance to Coffins. All these bands readily admit the influence of the mighty Winter. After a few dodgy reissues and shitty bootlegs from other labels comes the OFFICIAL re-release of "Into Darkness".

Brand new, second 7" from this North Carolina punk band sent to me by Grave Mistake Records. In the vein of 70s DANGERHOUSE style punk, BRAIN F≠ (don't ask me how to pronounce their name) power through 2 noisy, short rockers that are sure to hook fans of the genre. Honestly, I prefer this style to have vocals that are more up front and immediately catchy (ala THE AVENGERS or THE BAGS); and after the first couple riffs, I was expecting my eyes to glaze as the trebly Fender Telecaster washed in one ear and out the other, but as I listened on, this record started to catch me. The male/female vocals are buried in the noise, you get the feeling that the band has been up all night doing Heroin. You can almost picture the vocalists singing with their eyes half open...but still, they manage to grab ahold of you through the cymbals and furiously picked, overdriven guitar. This is something that I would place in the neighborhood of THE SPITS, or maybe BRUTAL KNIGHTS, this keeps growing on me the more I listen to it.

The high contrast, black and white matte fold-over cover is perfect for this release, I love the way it looks. It comes with lyrics and a short thanks list. Nice job on this release. 100 of this pressing come on red vinyl. The only complaint I could really see is that this is short, but luckily, there is the first 7" to track down, released by STATIC SHOCK RECORDS (Grave Mistake also has it in their webstore).

Great, catchy K-town punk comes to Columbus! This will probably be the Legion show of the year for me. Can't wait to see them in a smaller show setting. I saw them a couple years ago in Austin, TX at a big fest and they were great. This should be even better. Don't miss out!

Wretched started playing around 1980 in Milan, Italy. To this day, this band's intensity and rawness is matched by few. "Chaos non musica" was never more appropriate- the vocals are maniacal and the drums just sound like they are falling apart. Their passion is also shown on their releases, the records come with multiple inserts filled with writings about music and politics. Italy's history is smacked with political upheaval, so the Anarchist writings should come as no surprise. I am not sure what caused these fellows to want to play the demented music akin to a building crumbling from the top down...maybe a reaction to Italy's progressive rock scene of 70s and the dire circumstances of the realities of their daily lives?

Most people that I know found out about this band through the great P.E.A.C.E. 2x12" compilation. I don't remember specifically, but I would imagine that Pushead wrote his fair share about them.

Unfortunately, this great band's records are difficult to find, so snatch up whatever you can get your hands on! I am not a fan of bootlegs, but I think there are probably some legitimate compilations or reissue CDs floating around (I have a comp tape in my distro with them on it right now...The Ripping Thrash tape, reissued by Social Napalm). Of course, there are mp3s around, I'm sure, for the 21st century p0nx. There isn't much that I can really say that hasn't been documented elsewhere, so enjoy these pieces of eye and ear candy!

Not sure if they have any demo recordings floating around out there, I would love to hear them, if so. Get in touch!!

Recently bootlegged, heard it was relatively well done, don't know if the band received anything from it. However, this EP is included on 'The Furious Years Of Italian Hardcore Punk' CD, issued in 1995, I think this was a legitimate release.

Finira Mai 7" (Autoproduzione, 1983)
Fantastic release, with classic artwork. The title translates roughly to 'Never Ending.'

Libero Di Vivere Libero Di Morire 12" LP (Chaos Produzioni, 1984)
Here, you hear them start to tighten up a bit, starting to lose their ramshackle feel, still great though. This is the last record before they start going for a more metal sound. The last two records, I don't own and haven't heard them in a long time, so I can't really comment on them. The insane rawness is gone, but I would think that it is unavoidable to an extent, after playing together for 6 years, you're natually going to get tighter as a band and be forced to evolve. I don't have these next ones, but would like to!

YES! Old school Swedish dödsmetal done right, in a way that hearkens back to Entombed's Left Hand Path or early Dismember. Under The Hammer Of Destruction is not as rough as the demo, but still retains the nasty, punk edge. This is my kind of metal. Great cover art, and an all out assault of your aural senses without any dicking around. Released by the great Blood Harvest label from Sweden, it is still available, so don't sleep! People in North America, can get this from 20 Buck Spin, among some others, I am sure.

Christian Mistress- Agony & Opium LP

Fuck it. I am going to go ahead and say that this record is perfect. I love every song on this, from the raging Diamond Head riffs, on over to the Inepsy riffs, to the somewhat thin sound to the singer inflecting in the same way over and over again. This band from Olympia, WA also released a demo and 7" beforehand, that are also great. People have been talking up the 7", but personally, I think this LP is even better. I think hey have stepped up to the next level on their song writing and vocals. I love the breakdown in Home In The Sun and the riffing in Black Vigil is Diamond Head worthy. We also get perfect closure when they bring it on home with the epic ballad, Omega Stone. This is a classic metal record!

They are touring right now with The Thrones, catch them if you can.

**8/1/10 Dennis: The show was pretty successful, considering that it was built on 5 relatively unknown acts; we were able to raise around $400. Some were bummed that there wasn't more money raised, but honestly, that's not too bad, given the circumstances of the event and how many people were there.

The show was in a second floor room of The Mockbee. I love what they did to the room, there's a bar and a nice stage, for larger events. I love this building, it's an old industrial building, I'm not exactly sure what they used to do in there, but when you're in it you feel like you are in a 1950s fallout shelter. Really cool. See this photo of the room when you walk in, to get an idea.

I haven't seen Francis read his poetry in a long while, this guy just shoots 'straight from the heart' (good band...uh, no. Remember the Voice Of The Voiceless comp?) with so much passion, you gotta love him.

Lisa Walker was up next. One lady with her guitar and some pedals (Big Muff, Rat, etc). I don't know enough about the style of music she was doing to really describe it with any justice. Beautiful voice, the big concrete room really helped make her sound huge.

This was my first time seeing Realicide, I've seen the name around for about 8 years...I think it's a Digital Hardcore group? I'm not sure what style of music they call themselves. From talking to them, I don't think they're really concerned with what style of music they play as they are focused on their message. I assume people remember Atari Teenage Riot? It was kind of like that, but done better, with less pretension. I was pretty taken aback, people in the crowd were losing it, the energy was huge, it was really loud and aggressive, and the beats were fast. Gene Hoglan would have been hard pressed to keep up...but obviously, a drum machine may have a slight advantage in a drum off. It had a more punk vibe than ATR. Seeing this kind of thing was not something that I was used to, but it was a cool thing to see nonetheless. It's good to get out of your comfort zone. They were doing their own thing, I have more respect for that, than seeing some band just following punk trends. I made a comment about them before we played, and one of Realicide's members (Mavis, the DJ) came up to me later because someone told him that they thought I shit talked them, but we ended up having a cool conversation. Obviously I didn't, that's not my style, plus, I didn't have anything bad to say about them, someone just misunderstood what I said. Nice guy who seems into it for the right reasons.

Silo played our first show...unlike what happened with Lisa Walker, the big, concrete room didn't do a band like ours any favors. But hey, we did our thing and didn't fuck up our first show too bad. Things feel really good with this band, glad to be playing with Robby and Eric. Fuck, I am out of shape, my neck and throat hurt pretty bad today, after two shows in a row. Black Dove hasn't played in a while, so I'm feeling it today. Doing this at 35 feels different than doing it at 23. I'm not one of those people that likes to whine about getting older, I don't usually consider it an issue, but yeah, I'm starting to feel it. Once we get going and start doing more, the bang-overs will go away.

Holy Wars played last. Love the name. This is a newer Cincinnati band with people from White Walls and Order66. Loud, high energy, fast hardcore, while keeping the vibe fun. I dig Alex's vocals, and I enjoyed his energy. Kyle was holding it down on the bass. I thought the guitar player was trying a bit too hard to "go off," but hey, I'm an asshole and am picky about shit. I will say that they managed to sound pretty full in that large concrete room, due to his JCM 800 and JCM 2000 amps. That's no small feat. I'll be curious to hear them in a basement, hopefully we can get them in Columbus soon.

*10/26 - The cover show was a blast!! Despite having a wisDOOM tooth taken out and an arm injury, I was able to hack through the Slayer cover set with fellow brothers in metal worshipping the ALTAR OF SACRIFICE-- Ross from Exseraphim, Dru from Locusta and Robby from Black Dove/Paralyzer. We had such a blast getting together and learning 4 songs from Hell Awaits (Hell Awaits, Kill Again, Praise Of Death & Hardening Of The Arteries). We had so much fun that once we hit the outro at the end of Hardening Of The Arteries, we just went ahead and played Hell Awaits again! Although, I doubt many people noticed...

All the other bands that I got to watch ripped, this is always among my favorite shows of the year. I'm really glad we were able to pull it together and join in the fun...although it would have been ideal to have more than one practice!

PERDITION: East Coast Tour Tape (2009)

I was extremely excited to get this young, raw punk band to Columbus on their tour this year. There had been a bit of a buzz about them, people were happy to hear a band playing mid-paced d-beat really well, so I was happy to get to see them in Ohio. Wow, I have to say that their live show devastated me. I rarely get this excited about an American band these days, fucking great energy and perfect sound. Raw & noisy, but still powerful & dripping with ugliness and sweat.

It was on this tour that I picked up this "10-track cassette." 6 studio songs and 4 live songs, including a cover of a raw punk classic: Game Of The Arseholes by Anti-Cimex. Fucking hell, this band has it down. Well done lyrics and great sound. The songs on this tape are at least as good as their 7", so track this down if you can. I don't know if they plan on doing anything else with these songs other than just have them on the 75 tour cassettes that they made. Great band, can't wait to hear more from them...I will be picking up whatever they put out next!

I had no knowledge of this French band until this demo tape was mailed to me out of the blue a few months ago. To my delight, it is from members of GASMASK TERRÖR, and to a, should I dare, even better delight...the tape is great! Obvious love for CONFUSE and LEBENDEN TOTEN here, who can be upset about that? Noisy punk but with a more rocking approach rather than the unlistenable approach (which also have obvious merits). Great use of reverb on the vocals and also tasteful use of a wah-pedal (didn't think someone could say that about a raw punk band, did you?). Word is, they will have a record come out on a certain Japanese/French label soonish, so be on the look out. I am definitely looking forward to it. Besides the music, I really love the layout. The use of the pink highlighter pen is a nice touch. Photocopied j-card insert, is really the best format for a punk demo. It's nice in theory, to upgrade to cardstock or do some kind of other fancy design-y shit, but when it gets down to it, I really like the look and feel of a well done photocopied insert. It's just classic. Really great job.

Afters years of waiting, in the summer of 2009, Trip, Trance & Travelling was finally released on CD in Japan by H:G Fact. I knew it was going to come out on vinyl a couple months later, and bought the fucker anyway because I couldn't wait..if that tells you anything about how much I had been anticipating this third album of theirs. I have been in love with this band since I first heard them. Ultimate brilliance. Needless to say, I was not let down, I found myself floating on clouds of gummi bears while the hordes down below stabbed eachother with forks. Haters be damned and Chelsea R.I.P., too bad he didn't get to see this masterpiece come to light.

FUCKED FOR LIFE are thrashing 5 piece d-beat hardcore from Cincinnasty. Hank of BRODY'S MILITIA on bass. Really tight bashing, gruff vox, and fantastic drumming. Their tightness and bad attitude remind me of early POISON IDEA but with a prominent scandi sound in there. Certainly F.F.L have no influences beyond 1985 which may be before some of these maniacs were born!! Can I borrow your time machine? Songs are about hating life, getting fucked up, distortion, and getting fucked up, in that order. This tape had me making fists at cyclists from my car. Fuck bicycles! "Distortion & Death" is their anthem, simultaneously catchy and neck-breaking. SIKKKKKK! The last song "Down the Hatch" is a mid tempo rocker with a killer riff akin to "Detroit Rock City" by KISS but played with a hatred for non-alcoholic beverages. Being familiar with the F.F.L. live wall of distort, this demo seemed a little quiet but its not like i didn't love it and I'm ready for more. If you like wrecking ball hardcore punk, check out FUCKED FOR LIFE, they are one of the best bands in Ohio.

July Trip to Philadephia & NYC

Amanda and I went up to Philadelphia and NYC to hang out with our good buddy Josh. Saw some other good shit while we were at it.

We went to the Francis Bacon exhibit at the Metropolitan. Blew my mind, they had over 60 different pieces of his work. It was overwhelming to see that many of his pieces together at once. Fantastic and strange to see all these weirdos walking around looking at screaming Popes and people painted to look like bloody pieces of meat.

While we were trying to figure out our food options around Central Park, we heard this girl singing, like someone out of the musical, Annie. We looked around for a bit, confused, trying to figure out where this hideous, cute little voice was coming from. We then looked up and saw this girl sitting in front of her window, from the 5th floor (or so), just singing at the people down on the street. Bizarre.

We also went to the free Mission Of Burma / Fucked Up show. It was ok, and weird. I haven't seen Fucked Up since their 7" days, and they actually sounded pretty good, considering that it was outside, by the waterfront. Lots of ironic looking people walking around. Infuriating. Mission Of Burma sounded kind of shitty, but it was still cool to see them play, I guess.

After that, we went to the show that I was more exited for- Tragedy / Morne / Brain Handle / Blacklisted / Brainkiller. Like a dumb fuck, I was too late and missed Brainkiller. I really wanted to see them, their demo is great. Oh well. Brain Handle, Morne and Tragedy all destroyed. I was really pumped to finally see Morne...fucking crushing. I love the Filth Of Mankind records and obviously Grief rules, so this was highly anticipated for me after the great demo that Morne released. They did not disappoint.

One of my favorite records of 2009 given THEE supreme vinyl treatment. Scott "WINO" Weinrich is definitely is a legend of underground rock, He has been called "The Godfather of Doom Metal", "America's Lemmy" and "Guitar Worlds' 64th Greatest Metal Guitar Player of All Time". That should be good enough for a short bio. Punctuated Equilibrium is Wino's first solo effort in nearly 30 years of playing Power Fucking Trio, Biker Doom, Stoner Van Jams, Heavy Metal Spirit Rock, Whatever you call it, we all should have started paying attention in the 1980s. This LP with bonus 10" EP is signature WINO songwriting; a blend of Black Sabbath, Grand Funk, Metal Punk and lead guitar ripping that makes Frank Zappa smile from beyond. If you don't dig guitar solos then I'm sorry, maybe you should try some WINO. On this album WINO is joined by drummer Jean-Paul Gaster and John Blank on bass. Needless to say these guys are top notch players and I'm sure they were stoked to play on this record because It wouldn't be as good without them. The first cut sets the tone, This is where I open my sunroof because "Release Me" has less gloom and doom than I expect from WINO. Spirit Metal for sure! The second (title) track is thrashy metal punk that shows WINO's other side, The side of a dude who saw VOID and SSD on acid. "The Woman in the Orange Pants" is the first instrumental on the album and it is similar to the super heavy prog moments of WINO's last band THE HIDDEN HAND. "Smilin Road" could easily be off MOUNTAIN's Greatest Hits, and I mean that in the best way possible. On this track I noticed how great of a drummer J.P. Gaster is. He Smokes! The last song on side one "Eyes of the Flesh" has that unmistakable WINO DOOOOOM vibe, sick wah leads that nod to SAINT VITUS. Side two kicks off with a song that sounds like WINO jamming with the rythym section of FUGAZI and getting the DUB treatment. "Secret Realm Devotion" is a 70s style burner with a cool dumptruck low end wah wah riff. "Gods, Frauds and Neo-Cons" is another heavy proggy jammer with good lyrics about war and deception ala MC5. The verse at the end of song segues into the last cut "Silver Lining" a positive but heavy WINO vibe permeating the verse, culminating in a solo guitar freak out. Since the vinyl version comes with a bonus 10" ill be reviewing it too. Side C starts with a THREE DOG NIGHT cover which is really good and has some cool keyboard hooks. Der Gift is a short Prog jam with a bunch of otherwordly guitar sounds. "The Comet and the Moon" is a kinda poppy 70s rock song dedicated to his wife. Lets see you do that, tough guy. The 10" closes out with another Soulful Riffer that has a little southern rock feel. So when does the next one come out already??

The artwork and packaging for "Punctuated Equilibrium" are fantastic. It comes with lyrics and liner notes where WINO lays down some heavy wisdom. The 10" actually has its own pocket on the inside of the gatefold. The vinyl is forest green swirled and it looks great with the full color record labels. Its really cool to see Southern Lord records give the best treatment to this recording, Good job robed hessians.

Sadly, bass player Jon Blank passed away soon after the release of this record, R.I.P.

So I am going to be playing in my hometown area, in Parkersburg, West Virginia on July 24th. I actually grew up in Marietta, OH, which is just across the Ohio river...population, 14,000, nestled on the edge of Appalachia. We're not quite playing on the showboat Becky Thatcher or an Armory dance...but nevertheless....this should be interesting!

I am always chomping at the bit for new CROW material and when I found out that these new EPs were coming out, it was no different. For those that don't know, CROW is a Japanese band that has been releasing great material since the mid 80s. The trademark vocals are haunting and coarse...I love it. The music has transformed a bit since the early days of their DISCHARGE inspired d-beat days. For the most part, their recent stuff is crusty, metallic, dark hardcore, with a little experimentation here and there.

Each of these records come with 2 CROW songs, I have to admit, the songs on the SEE YOU IN HELL split shine a little brighter for me. The first song, "Traitors" is just fantastic. It starts off with an epic midpaced riff, that is harmonized, but then it picks up in pace. These days, "epic" and "crust" seem to scare people, but CROW defies all odds as they can do no fucking wrong. I don't feel that it takes away from their power, it just sounds wicked and haunting. Of course, I have to talk about the packaging for the SEE YOU IN HELL split. Really nice, silk screened, fold out covers, in silver ink, on black card stock. Looks great. The only little problem is that some of the type in the insert is too small and doesn't come through perfectly on the screen. The limited edition comes on red vinyl and 2 DVDs from SEE YOU IN HELL's '07 tour. It may seem like a bit much, but there is a lot of footage of many of the different great bands from their tour. Damn, I also have to mention, that the Czech band, SEE YOU IN HELL's side surprised the shit out of me. It's their best material that I have heard yet. It sounds more raw and seething than the previous efforts that I have heard. I will really be looking forward to their new releases...see if they can keep it up. I'm happy to say that their side is just as good as the CROW side. Fuck.

Ok, I just got the Prank ep today, "Flock Of Beast." When I first saw it, the cover art was a bit of a surprise, since they have never used a plain old picture of themselves live...as you can see, it's a picture of the vocalist. I usually look forward to some sick cut and paste, black/white art or even better, something hand drawn, like the demon face that they have been using on their recent releases, including both of these eps (originally from the cover of "The Door Of The End" 12" ep). Nevertheless, it still looks cool and you can't fault them for doing something different. 2 songs on this one and the songwriting is decidedly nastier than the SYIH split. Side A is a chugging, mid-paced, monster while side B picks up the pace but keeps the dark and ugly tone and ends in a mess of howling.

Both of these records are still available, and a re-mastered repress of the "Bloody Tear" 12" is coming down the pipeline as well. I'm crossing my fingers for another U.S. tour eventually, since I was a dumb ass and didn't fly to go see them when they came before.

CLASSIC FUKKIN RAGER. I finally got this record on ebay. I have bid and failed multiple times. It is now in constant rotation. Released by Pusmort in the USA and Selfish in Japan circa 1987. It features GAUZE, OUTO, SYSTEMATIC DEATH and LIPCREAM!!! Every track is killing and the cover is a classic. Thrash Til Death definitely kick started my interest in Japanese HC. I first heard it in Rapid City in 1996 or 1997. Jason Wade had it and we drunkenly jammed it at the "house of shit" all the time along with his copy of the S.O.B./Napalm Death flexi and the SIEGE 7". Sorry kids, records just aren't this good anymore. Thanks Jason. Thanks Pushead.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got the Project Hopeless 12". The political nature of the album really reminded me of the 90s U.K. anarcho-crust punk bands like Disaffect and Sedition. It was often mundane at the time, but in today's climate, it is actually a breath of fresh air. Most hardcore bands of today don't dare have such starkly leftist lyrics...maybe out of fear of sounding too naive? This mixed with a brutal Swedish hardcore sound is a great mix, in my book. Either way, I am looking forward to this show. From here, it looks solid all the way around. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Columbus' Empire in a while. For those outside of Ohio, they are our very own Integrity worshippers, playing heavy as shit hardcore. Great stuff. I am also interested to see Painkiller, I have heard good things.
